1 What do you and your team do at IOOF?
I am the new Marketing and Communications Manager and my key responsibility is to look after the marketing and communications requirements of the Portfolio Solutions team. One of the things I manage is of course the @dviser Magazine.
2 When and why did you join IOOF?
I joined IOOF on 1st October 2009 based on the recommendation of a good friend who also happens to work for IOOF. Seeing that I’ve only been here a very short time, there is still a lot for me to learn about this great company. Having said this, I’ve already met many intelligent, talented and friendly people to help make my short time here a very pleasant one indeed.
3 What was your first job?
My very first job was as a music teacher when I was still living in Malaysia. I started learning the electronic organ at a very young age, and when I was in high school, I became a part-time music teacher to earn some extra pocket money. I absolutely loved seeing my students learn and grow and flourish in self-confidence. It was a great experience as I had to learn to work with students ranging from four-year-old-twins to an army sergeant who was in his 40’s. That was of course a long time ago and I am now well and truly entrenched into the Australian financial services industry, which I thoroughly enjoy being a part of.
4 What is the strangest thing that’s happened to you at work?
Hmm, let me think. I suppose it was my first job in Australia with the ANZ. I was in the Corporate Affairs department at that time and had organised a dinner for VIP clients with the CEO. One of the guests was a very well known figure in the Australian business world and was also one of the richest men in Australia. As I ushered him into the lift, he looked directly at a very attractive young female guest and said, “I would very much like for you to be the centre piece of my table tonight”. We were gobsmacked and luckily the trip in the lift was a very short one.
5 Tell us one fact your colleagues might be surprised to learn
That I was a martial arts expert prior to migrating to Australia. I was only one step away from getting my black belt before coming out to Melbourne to further my studies. It was a great sport that involved both physical strength and mental discipline and I might take it up again one day!
6 Craziest thing I've done…
Flying-fox hunting with my dad in Malaysia. The pitch black sky, the leeches and the bruising I got from the force of firing that shotgun – not my idea of a good time at all. To my dad’s disappointment, that was my first and last hunting experience.
7 Something I’d like to learn is…
To be as good a cook as my mum. She is an AMAZING cook and hopefully one day I’ll find the inspiration to cook like she does.
8 What is your favourite sports team?
Don’t have a favourite team but I do enjoy watching the AFL, Tour de France and Motor GP.
9 What is your favourite TV show?
There are too many to choose from. My current favourites are NCIS and Glee.
10 If I didn't live in Melbourne…
I’d be somewhere in Asia, so that I can be closer to my family in Malaysia.
